You might have heard of this treatment over recent years in the media, with several sports people and celebrities being seen with the infamous round shaped ‘bruising’ on their bodies, but there are records showing this techniques being used as early as 1,500 BC but the ancient Egyptian, Chinese and Middle Eastern cultures.
Cupping therapy involves special cups (i use a mixture of glass and silicon cups and not fire cupping), being placed on the body to create suction over a painful area or along the energy meridians to help improve the energy flow. These can be left on for several minutes or moved for a deep tissue massage. When left for a long amount of time, this is when the ‘bruising’ can occur, although this is normal and not really bruising. Theses marks can last upto a few days but mostly go down within a few hours.
Benefits of Cupping Therapy
- reduces pain
- reduces inflammation
- increases blood flow
- deep tissue tension release
- promotes relaxation and well-being

Pronounced “gwahshah”, this technique is a traditional East Asian technique, which aims to move blocked energy (Qi) and stagnant blood, which can be the cause of aches, pains and stiffness in the body.
A specialised tool (traditionally horn but now metal or crystal), is ‘scraped’ over the body (Gua meaning scrape and Sha meaning flush/redness), to help increase the flow of blood and energy in the body, remove any energy blockages (known to cause pain) and release tension in the muscles and soft tissue.
- Please note that redness in the area worked on can occur and can last for a few days, although generally does go down in a few hours and can sometimes look like a red/purple bruise. This is a normal reaction and it has not damaged the skin in anyway, it is the body’s way of healing where there has been a problem.
Benefits of Gua Sha
- relieves muscle and joint pain
- relieves pain caused by Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- helps break up lesions caused by scar tissue
- improves circulation
- can improve menopausal symptoms
- The crystal Gua Sha tools can be used on the face as a natural face lifting treatment as it improves the natural contours and helps to reduce the appearance of fine line and wrinkles (Salon facial treatments available- see Holistic section of website)
